Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay was asked by a Leeds United supporter on Twitter on Sunday whether manager Marcelo Bielsa will leave if the club fails to win promotion, and he delivered a simple two-word response – “Don’t know”.

The Argentine’s brother recently revealed in an interview in his home country with La Capital that the Yorkshire outfit have an option to keep the 63-year-old this summer regardless of whether they win promotion or not.

As things stand with four fixtures left to play they are on course for the former with a top-two finish, but with Sheffield United just three points adrift of them they could conceivably still end the campaign in the play-off positions.

When a Leeds fan on the popular social media platform wrote that it was good news for the Championship high-flyers, Hay at first responded: “You know Bielsa though. He’d only stay if he wanted to if Leeds didn’t go up. You couldn’t force someone like him to stick around.”

Then when directly asked by another supporter whether the popular South American would leave if they don’t go up he said: “Pass. Don’t know.”

The Elland Road faithful will obviously be praying they go up automatically to not only finally return to the Premier League but to try and stop any speculation over their manager’s future.

One thing is for certain though, if they don’t make it then the 63-year-old will surely be a target for a lot of clubs during the close season given the amazing impact he has made in west Yorkshire.
